The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge might be the most famous parents in the world at the moment - but another couple nearly got caught in the spotlight.

Duchess Kate was taken to St Mary's Hospital in central London at about 6am on Monday morning (local time), after suffering her first labour pains. She gave birth five hours later.

The world's media gathered outside the hospital, desperate to be the first to get a photo of the new baby when Kate exited.

Then, an unsuspecting couple stepped through the doors - and were shocked by the press outside.

"A baby has arrived!! But it's not yet Kate... this happy couple are just leaving with their new baby and all the world's press clapping them!" another person said on Twitter.

The new parents graciously posed for photos with the press - and were met with a good-humoured response on social media.
