A 12-year-old boy has survived being trapped underwater for 10 minutes in a lazy river pool ride in South Carolina in the US.

Newly released security footage shows members of the public rushing to help the boy during the incident at Avista Resort, Myrtle Beach, last month.

A man was able to give him mouth-to-mouth resuscitation while he was still underwater, until emergency services arrived to pull him out of the pool.

The incident was reportedly caused by the boy and his friend pulling off a grate and the bottom of the pool, which sucked the 12-year-old boy down and trapped him underwater for 10 minutes.

He was taken to hospital and authorities have confirmed that he survived the ordeal, according to WHNT News.

In a statement, the hotel thanked emergency services and members of the public for helping the boy.
