A woman has appeared in court charged with assault after she allegedly bit a waiter's arm in rage over the price of a fish dish.

Chunping Quan, 48, reportedly called 000 to complain about the price of her $48 meal, claiming she ordered a full fish meal but only received half, The Advertiser reports.

Ms Quan appeared in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Wednesday charged with failing to make a payment and assault over the incident at Nice Fish Chinese Restaurant, Adelaide, in June last year.

The court heard how Ms Quan and the 19-year-old waiter had an argument because he tried to stop Ms Quan leaving after she only paid $26.50 for the meal.

Ms Quan allegedly bit him on the arm, started pinching him and grabbing him at the neck before police showed up at the scene.

The waiter was taken to hospital and received stitches to the bites on his arm.

She defended her actions in court saying, "This is Australia, this is not China."

The magistrate has reserved its decision and Ms Quan is scheduled to appear in court in September.
