A CNN investigation has found 103 Uber drivers have been accused of sexual assault or abuse in the US in the past four years.

The drivers were arrested, have been named in civil suits relating to the incidents, or are wanted by the police.

At least 31 of these drivers have been convicted for crimes which include false imprisonment, rape and forcible touching.

CNN found dozens of criminal and civil cases which are still pending.

Uber's branding message reads "a safe ride home" with adverts promoting it a safe alternative to driving drunk.

The 'Designated rider' campaign urged users to take an Uber instead of driving under the influence.

The CNN investigation revealed many of the women raped or attacked by the 103 accused drivers were inebriated or had been drinking at the time.
