A 21-year-old Australian has been left unrecognisable after undergoing over 40 body modification procedures.

Ethan Bramble has been undergoing the procedures since he was a teen, including a tongue split and eye tattoos, News.com.au reports.

With an Instagram following of 65,000 he says the piercings, stretching and tattooing procedures have been well worth the pain

He first took an interest in modifications at the age of 11 by stretching his ear lobes.

Yet he says his decisions are no different from a person dying their hair or putting on makeup in the morning.

"It's the way you want to look, your appearance and I've always been a strong believer in you shouldn't really judge people in the way they look," he told News.com.au.

At 17 he got his tongue split, a procedure he says put him through five days of horror - he even had to sleep upright for fear of choking on his own spit.

But if people find that freaky, Mr Bramble says the eyeball tattooing process was pretty intense in its own right.

"You have one person holding your eyelids open and it's up to you to stare at the wall at a certain spot," he said.

"It's so stressful because if you move your eyeball when there's a syringe in there, you'll go blind."

Body modification has been in the headlines in Australia following the arrest of a "body modification expert" for female genital mutilation in 2016.

In response to the arrest the Daily Telegraph quoted New South Wales Health Minister Brad Hazzard as saying the body modification industry was "the worst barbarism imaginable".
