A Chinese woman has been left shocked after she discovered her puppy was actually a fox.

The woman known as Ms Wang told Shanxi Network Television she bought what she thought to be a Japanese spitz puppy for £140 (NZ$270) from a pet shop last July.

When the dog was three-months-old it stopped eating dog food and grew a long fluffy tail, Ms Wang explained.

She also noticed her dog never barked.

Ms Wang took her dog to the local zoo and a staff member confirmed her dog was in fact a domesticated white coat fox.

Since then she decided to give up her pet, giving it to the zoo so it would get the best nutrition and living environment.
