Climate activists raising money to carve Trump's face into glacier

Finnish climate change activist group Project Trumpmore are raising money to fund a 115 foot tall carving of United States President Donald Trump into a glacier.

The group aims to raise €400,000 (NZ$685,000) to fund the carving in the likeness of the American presidents depicted on Mount Rushmore in South Dakota.

President Trump joked about his face being carved into Mount Rushmore during a campaign rally in Ohio last year. If the activist group raises enough money, Trump's face will be carved into a glacier instead, as a protest against his stance on climate change.

"If we reach the construction phase, the plan is to build Trumpmore to match the size of the presidents on Mount Rushmore," the activist group's website says.

"The execution of the project will be carried out by a world-leading team of Finnish and Mongolian ice sculptors," it adds.

"Estimated building will take four weeks and the process will be documented and broadcast via a live feed."

In 2012 Trump called climate change a Chinese hoax. On June 1 last year, he announced that the US would cease all participation in the 2015 Paris Agreement on climate change mitigation.

Trump said "The Paris accord will undermine (the US) economy," and "puts (the US) at a permanent disadvantage."

Project Trumpmore criticises Trump's stance on climate change, highlighting a December 2017 tweet where he said the east coast of the US "could use a little bit of that good old Global Warming." He posted the tweet during a period of record-breaking low temperatures across the eastern US during winter 2017.

The activist group hopes that people won't follow Trump's lead on climate change.

"People don't follow politicians, politicians follow people," the group says.

"We hope that the more conversation takes place around our monument and global warming, the better possibilities politicians have to make concrete fact based decisions."

Project Trumpmore is currently searching for a location for the Trump carving. They said the monument will be carved on the melting Arctic glacier, where "the effect of global warming is said to be its most concrete."

In January, Trump said the US could "conceivably" return to the Paris climate accord if an agreement treated the country more fairly.
