Florida police are responding to an active shooter at an apartment complex in Panama City on Wednesday (NZ time).

Witnesses say they have heard up to 100 shots between police and the gunman, and at least one person is thought to have been injured. Officers are attempting to get residents out of the area safely.

Bay County Sheriff's Office chief investigator Jimmy Stanford says law enforcement is looking for a male suspect involved in a suspicious death.

A spokeswoman for Panama City says the suspect is barricaded inside an apartment.

Local resident Kim Coram told The Independent the suspect had shot at a Swat vehicle.

"The shooter unloaded 20 more shots in the armoured vehicle," Ms Coram said.

Two nearby schools have been put in lockdown as a precaution.
