A Freudian slip from the French president has sent social media into hysterics.

President Emmanuel Macron was at a press conference in Sydney with Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull when he began expressing his gratitude for the Australian leader.

But he didn't stop at the man, going on to show an unusual appreciation for Mr Turnbull's wife Lucy.

"I want to thank you for your welcome, you and your delicious wife for the warm welcome," President Macron said.

The comment quickly gained momentum online with some saying delicieux ,the French word for delicious, can sometimes mean 'delightful'.

Others said the joke could have been a reference to Donald Trump's visit to Paris last year.

It was then that the American president was caught telling Mr Macron's wife Brigitte that she was in great shape. He proceeded to look at her husband and say "beautiful".
