British motorists heading away to enjoy their national Bank Holiday weekend have been met with traffic nightmares after two of the UK's main motorways were closed following a tanker explosion and a major car crash.

Both directions of the M62 were closed due to an oxygen tanker exploding into flames and blowing smoke across all lanes.

There were no injuries reported.

One witness told the Daily Mail he saw "smoke and flames billowing from the tanker".

"It's the worst incident I've ever seen on the motorways, and we were able to drive right past it so everyone had a good look."

Authorities confirmed three fire-fighting crews attended the scene.

Meanwhile, travellers near Heathrow Airport were stuck in stand-still traffic after a huge car crash caused hours-long delays.

Three lanes were closed, forcing motorists to get out of their cars on one of the hottest days of the year.

Among those stranded on the motorway was TV host Paddy McGuinness, who shared a video of the traffic jam to Instagram.

The motorway was reopened a couple of hours later, though drivers were sent on a detour - adding more time to their already lengthy drives.
