A woman has been left dismayed after discovering she'd accidentally given a kebab shop an enormous tip instead of entering her PIN number.

Olesya Shemyakova, who is Russian but lives in France, was visiting the city of Dietikon in Zurich, Switzerland, when she stopped by the New Point kebab shop.

Despite not speaking German, which is Switzerland's most commonly used language, the 37-year-old managed to order drinks and chocolate cake for her and her son.

She paid by card, but there was an issue when she went to punch in her PIN number.

"I entered my PIN code but it did not work," she told the Daily Mail.

"Then I entered it a second time and then it functioned. I assumed that I paid 23.70 CHF (NZ$33.90) that was also stated on my receipt."

It wasn't until two weeks later that Ms Shemyakova, who is unemployed, discovered that 7709 CHF (NZ$11,027) had been taken out of her account.

She realised that she'd accidentally entered the four digits of her PIN number as a generous tip for the kebab shop.

Since realising her expensive mistake, she has been working with her credit card company and the shop to get her money back.

The owner of New Point, Cengiz Gökduman, told Switzerland's 20 Minuten that Ms Shemyakova will be refunded as soon as possible.

Her PIN number has now been changed.
