A man has shot dead two police officers and a passerby in the Belgian city of Liege.

Authorities say he attacked two female police officers with a knife, inflicting multiple stab wounds. He then shot them dead with their own guns.

The attacker also shot dead a 22-year-old man in a nearby car.

He then entered a school where he took a woman working there hostage.

As he tried to leave the school he was shot and killed by police.

Belgium's national broadcaster RTBF identified the gunman as a 36-year-old from the town of Rochefort who was on day release from prison.

The incident is being investigated as a terrorist act.
