An armed man has reportedly taken two people hostage in Paris.

There was a "police intervention" happening on Tuesday at Rue des Petites Ecuries in the 10th arrondissement, the Paris Police Prefecture confirmed to CNN.

The area has been cordoned off by police, reports claim.

There have been videosand images circulating on social media of police vehicles and armed officers surrounding the area.

One of the hostages is believed to be pregnant.

According to CNN, the armed man has been described as "unstable", but there is no indication yet that he is linked to any terrorist organisation - however, police are yet to confirm more details.

French authorities have been on high alert since a series of terror attacks have taken place over the last few years.

In May, two people died and five were injured during a frenzied knife attack in Paris.
