A man has been arrested in the Gold Coast after a valiant attempt to rescue his pet dog from a huge blaze.

The fire, which destroyed an entire apartment complex, was said to have been riddled with asbestos.

In what was deemed a dangerous attempt to save the three-year-old dog, Troy Mortimer was forced to climb a tree to get up onto a balcony.

He told 7 News that he could hear the dog yelping as fire services and police arrived.

Police were quick to get residents evacuated, but Mr Mortimer refused as he was trying to rescue his dog.

Due to the asbestos contamination, residents were asked to stay out of the exclusion zone and keep their windows closed.

He was then charged with obstructing the police.

Luckily the dog escaped un-harmed but five residents of the Burleigh Heads complex are now left without homes.
