Buyers of the first 1000 Boring Company flamethrowers got their hands on the dangerous devices at the weekend.

Founder Elon Musk initially proposed selling the flamethrowers as a joke, but that joke has become a reality with the 'Not-A-Flamethrower' going on sale with a hefty US$500 price tag earlier this year - and selling out immediately.

A thousand customers were invited to the Boring Company headquarters, opposite SpaceX in Los Angeles, to personally collect the first batch this weekend.

"I love fire," one buyer told The Guardian. "I play with torches and gasoline all the time so this is the ultimate toy that I'll play with for all my life."

The tech billionaire described the Not-A-Flamethrower as "The way to light your fire place or BBQ. No more need to use a dainty match to ignite! If no wood, just drop your flamethrower in the fire place! It will generate way more warmth than a quaint pile of logs."

But he's urging users to use them responsibly.

"Please use as directed to avoid unintentionally burning things down."

The flamethrower also comes with a 10-page manual, with safety tips including having a fire extinguisher or a bucket of water available when using it.
