A Melbourne woman is on the hunt for the former owner of a second-hand book she bought, after she discovered a devastating note inside the cover.

Natalie Coleman bought the book 5 Minute Princess Stories from an op shop in May to read with her young daughter Leni, 7News reports.

But it wasn't until she got home and opened the book that she noticed the very personal message inside.

"Dear Alexis, if you're getting this without me, it's because unfortunately my circumstances got too grim for me to give to you yourself," the note reads.

"You need to know I always loved you with all my heart.

"You were the first thing I thought about when I woke up in the morning, and the last thing I thought about at night.

"Love Dad (Barry)."

Ms Coleman has now started reaching out to people to find the book's rightful owner. She went back to the op shop to see if they could find Alexis, but when that didn't work she turned to Facebook.

"The message just breaks my heart," she wrote. "If you know Alexis (Dad named Barry) I would love to return your book."
