A trapped raccoon has left onlookers anxious after scaling 23 floors of a Minnesota building.

The raccoon was originally stranded for two days on a ledge on a nearby two-storey building.

However, when would-be rescuers spooked it, it climbed to the next-door UBS tower.

It then scaled 23 floors of the tower, gripping onto the rough concrete on the building's surface.

Small crowds gathered on the street by the tower, and many desperate calls were placed to local animal rescue organisations.

Even Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn offered to donate $1000 to charity in the name of anyone who saved the raccoon.

"I can't handle this. Poor dude," the director wrote on Twitter.

The fire department told local media it wouldn't risk sending firefighters over the edge of the building to save the raccoon.

However, they eventually lured the raccoon to the roof with cat food and took it to safety.
