Two hedgehogs were found drunk slumped next to a bottle of advocaat at a children's playground in Germany.

Police say the spiky animals were "absolutely motionless" when they were found last Sunday.

They picked them up and took them to the Thuringian Zoo where staff treated them, Metro reports.

Police saw the humour in the incident posting a photo to Facebook saying the hedgehogs were "extremely difficult" to communicate with.

"The communication with the drunkards was extremely difficult, because both had only very vague memories of the happenings, their environment and their earthly existence."

It is thought the hedgehogs got hold of the alcohol because someone had left the bottle of advocaat on the playground.

"Please dispose of your garbage in the available garbage cans! In this example, we see the danger of careless objects.

"Bottles can be broken in a playground not only playing children but also animals like our hedgehogs."

The pair are expected to make a full recovery.
