An American couple are considering getting divorced to pay for their daughter's medical costs.

Texas couple Jake and Maria Grey's six-year-old daughter Brighton suffers from rare chromosomal disorder Wolf-Hirschhorn Syndrome, which causes her hearing and vision impairments.

The couple who have been married nine years are struggling to afford her $20,000 treatment.

Ms Grey told television station WFAA caring for Brighton was like looking after a newborn baby.

They have been paying for her treatment off a single salary of US$54,000.

Ms Grey said if she divorced and became a single mother-of-two, she could qualify for the state healthcare provider, Medicaid.

"It's morally wrong, I feel like, and I think it's conflicting for me too, because I feel like what's happening to us is morally wrong," Mr Grey told WFAA.

The family is hopeful they won't have to resort to such measures but say they will do anything to give their daughter a better quality of life.
