US President Donald Trump has denied Russia meddled in the 2016 US election.

Trump met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Helsinki today, and contradicted US intelligence agencies in a joint press conference following the meeting.

"I don't see any reason why it would be [Russia meddling]," Trump said.

"I have great confidence in my intelligience people, but President Putin was incredibly strong in his denial."

Putin admitted he hoped Trump would win the election in 2016.

"Yes I did [want him to win]. Because he talked about bringing the US-Russia relationship back to normal," Putin said.

US intelligence agencies believe the Kremlin acted to influence the 2016 US Presidential election in which Trump won over Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton.
