Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg has moved to clarify remarks he made about Holocaust deniers.

In an interview with ReCode's Kara Swisher, he made reference to Holocaust denials as an example of controversial misinformation that Facebook would allow to remain on its platform.

"I'm Jewish and there's a set of people that deny that the Holocaust happened," Mr Zuckerberg said.

"I find that deeply offensive but at the end of the day, I don't think that our platform should take that down because I think there are things that different people get wrong.

"I don't think they're intentionally getting it wrong."

Mr Zuckerberg's comments provoked widespread backlash, and within hours he moved to clarify his comments.

"I personally find Holocaust denial deeply offensive, and I absolutely didn't intend to defend the intent of people who deny that," he wrote in an email to Ms Swisher.

In coming months, Facebook will begin to take down content it determines is contributing to imminent violence.
