Israel helps in evacuation of Syria's White Helmets to Jordan

Israel has helped the evacuation of 422 Syrians to neighbouring Jordan in a United Nations coordinated international humanitarian operation.

The group evacuated included members of the White Helmets rescue group - a volunteer workforce that aims to save people in Syria's war zones.

There had been concern in recent weeks that the volunteers' lives were at risk Syrian forces tightened their grip on an area in south Syria, one of the last rebel-held areas.

Jordan had requested the evacuation of 800, but the official number taken was 422.

Those evacuated will remain in a restricted area in Jordan for the time being, before being transferred to Britain, Canada and Germany in coming months.
