A US man was injured after a camera in his shoe exploded, foiling his plans to commit a sexual felony.

The 32-year-old Wisconsin man had fitted the device with the intention of taking photos of women under their skirts without their knowledge.

He handed himself into local police for a "sex offence" but was not charged because he hadn't yet taken any images before the camera battery exploded.

According to local police he was treated for minor burns, counselled on his actions, and then released.

Upskirting - secretly filming or photographing someone under their clothing without permission - was made a felony offence in Wisconsin in 2015.

The offence carries a maximum punishment of three and a half years in prison and a US$10,000 (NZ$14,800).
