Melbourne zoos have stopped selling Nestle products after the company was suspended from an international organisation that promotes sustainable use of palm oil.

Zoos Victoria, which runs the Melbourne and Werribee zoos, is a strong campaigner of the sustainable production of palm oil.

Last week Nestle had its certification with Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) after it failed to submit a report outlining its actions on how it would buy and produce sustainable palm oil, ABC News reports.

Zoos Victoria says it will not sell the company's products until it complies with the RSPO standards, ABC News reports.

Palm oil has long been criticised and blamed for threatening the endangered orangutan populations found on Sumatra, Indonesia.

Nestle has until July 20 to submit the report or its RSPO membership will end.
