A Perth woman has miraculously woken up from a month-long coma after contracting what she thought was a common cold.

Renee Power, 21, was dubbed a 'Sleeping Beauty', as no one knew if she would wake up or not after developing the deadly virus encephalitis, 7 News reports.

Before she lost consciousness, however, Ms Power thought she was simply suffering a cold - but the truth was encephalitis had launched an attack on her brain.

Her symptoms temporarily halted her breathing and nearly killed her, but defying all odds, Ms Power regained consciousness and is now learning to walk and talk again.

"[I'm] so lucky - very lucky. I'm lucky that I even woke up," she told 7 News.

Her mother described the situation as heart-wrenching.

"It was like your heart was being torn out... and would she ever wake?" her mother said about the situation.

Hospital staff and her family kept a diary of the last month, which Ms Power has now been given to read.

"It was upsetting because I feel really sorry for putting them through all of that, but they said I couldn't do anything about it. It was out of my power," she said.
