Search 'idiot' on Google, get Trump

Type the word "idiot" into Google Images and you'll be flooded with pictures of US President Donald Trump.

Online activists have manipulated Google's search algorithms to link images of Trump with the word.

The association between Mr Trump and 'idiot' received attention during his controversial visit to the UK last week, where protestors prominently blasted Green Day's 'American Idiot' during demonstrations.

Reddit users have since jumped on the digital bandwagon, upvoting a post featuring the word and an image of Trump, the Guardian reported.

Reddit, which refers to itself as the front page of the internet, uses the upvoting system to distinguish its most popular posts, which are subsequently prioritised in Google search results.

The post received thousands of upvotes, leading to other posts and news articles, which pushed images of Mr Trump up the search results for the word.

But it's not the first time pranksters have taken advantage of Google's algorithms.

In 2009, an offensive image of First Lady Michelle Obama's face altered with ape-like features gained traction, but Google refused to change the algorithm.

The company said search engines were a reflection of popular online content and there are thousands of variables that calculate the content's relevance, the Guardian reported.

Any changes to the algorithms were made to make the search function more useful, rather than culturally sensitive.
