US President Donald Trump has accepted the resignation of Scott Pruitt, the head of the Environmental Protection Agency.

Mr Trump tweeted on Thursday (US time) that he has accepted Mr Pruitt's resignation, and the Senate has confirmed the agency's deputy administrator, Andrew Wheeler, will become the acting head.

Mr Pruitt's departure follows months of scrutiny that snowballed after reports that Mr Pruitt had rented a Capitol Hill condominium linked to an energy lobbyist on favourable terms, CNBC reports

There were revelations about the high cost of Mr Pruitt's travel and security detail, and also accusations he used his office for self-dealing.
