US coffee giant Starbucks to remove all plastic straws from stores by 2020

Starbucks has announced it will remove all plastic straws from its cafes around the world by 2020.

The global coffee giant, which has more than 28,000 stores, will offer recylable plastic lids on it's cold drink selection which do not require the use of a straw.

The company estimates the move will eradicate more than one billion plastic straws from circulation.

Customers will still be able to request straws with their drinks but will only be offered paper or compostable options.

The move is fuelled by growing consumer environmentalism, with many governments and companies around the world implementing various forms of plastic bans.

Starbucks plans to begin phasing out plastic straws in the US later this year before expanding globally, including their 21 stores across New Zealand, in 2019.
