What the rescued Thai boys wanted as first meal

Four of the boys stuck in a cave in northern Thailand, with only emergency rations to eat, asked for a local favourite when they were rescued on Monday.

It wasn't burgers, steak or a plate of chips but a simple dish of rice and basil, or pad kra pao, the ravenous boys requested.

Pad kra pao is a relatively new dish to Thailand and is rice, spicy basil and chicken or pork with vegetables.

Former Governor of Chiang Rai Narongsak Osottanakorn told reporters at the scene the four were okay and had asked for the meal.

The dish is popular street food in Thailand and is served with beans, chilli, mushrooms and a fried egg.

Eight of the boys have now been rescued, with four and the coach left in the cave. A further rescue attempt is due to get underway this afternoon.

It is unlikely the boys got their culinary request, with doctors saying they could eat normal food but only food in a diluted porridge-like state.

They are also being held in isolation to avoid the risk of infection or passing on anything they picked up in the cave.

Medics were considering whether their parents could see them through a glass door.

Thai media is reporting the delay is to help manage both the boys' and the parents' mental health.
