A woman sparked a bomb scare when she tried to board a plane with a World War II explosive she found while hiking in Austria.

The 24-year-old found the antique bomb during a hike through the Dachstein Mountain in the Austrian Alps and decided to take it home with her to the United States.

But the woman wasn't able to board her flight from Vienna International Airport after she revealed the WWII high-explosive shell to a customs officer, asking if it counted as an electronic device.

The young woman said she had wanted to keep the shell as a souvenir and even washed it in her hotel bathroom after she found it so it wouldn't make her suitcase dirty.

Bomb disposal officials were called to the airport straight away, according to police spokesperson Walter Schwarzenecker, and it was confirmed that the shell was a dud.

Nevertheless, areas of the airport were closed off as specialists took the 75mm anti-tank shell away safely.

The woman was reportedly fined $6700.
