Aussie bar turns disabled woman away from her own 21st birthday

A New South Wales bar has apologised for turning away a disabled woman on Sunday because staff thought she was drunk.

The Marlborough Hotel says the bar "ruined her night" and her 21st birthday.

"We refused entry to a young lady as we believed she was intoxicated. Reality was she had cerebral palsy," it said on Facebook.

"We apologise to the young lady, her friends and family. Unreservedly. We apologise for the humiliation and distress that we have caused.

"We are committed to building awareness of this issue with our entire team through intensive anti-discrimination training."

Some people say the apology does not go far enough and the bar should have given the woman compensation for the embarrassment and inconvenience caused.

"How about you make it up to this young lady and her family and friends by throwing her a party, food and drinks on you?" one user wrote.

"What is sad is that now this woman's memory of an important milestone will, at least in part, be forever marred by the ignorance surrounding her condition, rather than remembered as a joyous celebration," said another.

"That is irreversible. But I think something, besides a written apology, should be offered."
