Researchers are suggesting you don't run dish-wash or run your favourite plastic containers under hot water.

In a report released last week by the American Academy of Pediatrics, paediatricians said that there is growing evidence that every-day cleaning practises could be leading to the leakage of dangerous chemicals.

Running plastics like containers and bottles through a dishwasher or under hot water may lead to chemical residue leaking, which means they could become dangerous for future use.

The report also warned against microwaving plastics holding food or liquid, which the chemicals could contaminate, and recommended using glass and stainless steel containers as alternatives for washing.

Some plastics contain bisphenols, such as BPA, which are used to harden the plastic and "can act like estrogen in the body" - affecting immune systems, decreasing fertility and increasing body fat if consumed, according to the Academy.

The United States' food addictive regulation process was criticised in the article, with Dr Leonardo Trasande, the report's lead author, saying more needed to be done to ensure chemicals did not find their way into foods.
