The Washington teenager who pushed her friend off a bridge causing severe injuries is now facing jail time.

Taylor Smith, 18, has been charged with reckless endangerment after pushing 16-year-old Jordan Holgerson off the 18m-high bridge on August 7.

Smith faces punishment of up to one year in jail and a fine of up to $7,540.

And new video obtained by NBC News shows Ms Holgerson asked her friends to stop and wait for 15 minutes before being pushed.

Ms Holgerson sustained serious injuries, including five broken ribs and a punctured lung.

Speaking publically for the first time on Good Morning America on Friday (local time) she said she never intended to hurt her friend.

"I've apologised several times, but I haven't been able to see her in person. I went to the hospital. I got asked to leave; I wasn't allowed to see her."

Initially Ms Holgerson didn't want to press charges, but told Daily Mail she now wants to see Smith in jail.

"I had five broken ribs, and we just found out I have another broken rib, and I had two punctured lungs, I'm in a lot of pain. In the mornings it's the worst. It hurts to breathe, my side hurts, my shoulder hurts, I can't even get up."

Doctors say her recovery will take months and the rest of the school year.
