The California wildfires are now the largest in state history, having burned through 283,800 acres of land.

Firefighters across state are currently battling 16 blazes, with the Carr Fire in the north having claimed seven lives.

US President Donald Trump says the fires are far worse than they should be because of California's environmental laws.

"California wildfires are being magnified & made so much worse by the bad environmental laws which aren't allowing massive amounts of readily available water to be properly utilized. It is being diverted into the Pacific Ocean. Must also tree clear to stop fire from spreading!" Trump tweeted.

The comments have been widely criticised and dismissed by officials.

In fact, many of the fires are near major reservoirs which are at their historic levels.

"There have been no issues getting water from them," Scott McLean, a spokesperson for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection told the LA Times.

More than 14,000 firefighters, including some from New Zealand, are helping to fight the fires in difficult conditions.

Heat, low humidity and strong winds have all made for a tough job containing the fires and it doesn't appear as though things are going to improve dramatically in the short term, with forecast highs of up to 43C in some affected areas.
