Donald Trump fires back at Michael Cohen after guilty plea

  • 23/08/2018

US President Donald Trump has taken aim at his former laywer, Michael Cohen, in a series of tweets.

"If anyone is looking for a good layer, I would strongly suggest you don't retain the services of Michael Cohen!" Mr Trump wrote on Twitter.

Cohen has pleaded guilty to tax evasion, bank fraud and campaign finance violations and also admitted he made hush-money payments to women at Mr Trump's direction.

Mr Cohen's plea states he paid two women, believed to be porn actress Stormy Daniels and Playboy model Karen McDougal, "at the direction" of an unnamed person running for federal office - meaning Mr Trump.

Asked in court whether or not he knew what he was doing was illegal, Mr Cohen said he did.

In another tweet, the President suggested campaign finance violations were not in fact a crime.

Both the prosecutors and Mr Cohen have agreed that the campaign finance violations are crimes.

Mr Cohen's lawyer Lanny Davis has said his client wants nothing from Mr Trump, and would not accept a presidential pardon if it were offered.
