US President Donald Trump has taken to Twitter to lash out at the media, labelling it the "opposition party" and say it is "very bad" for the United States.

"THE FAKE NEWS MEDIA IS THE OPPOSITION PARTY. It is very bad for our Great Country... BUT WE ARE WINNING!" Mr Trump's tweet read.

Mr Trump has had a long running feud with the US press, and his Thursday morning outburst didn't end with one tweet.

Mr Trump took aim at the Boston Globe, which ran an editorial denouncing his labelling of the press as the 'enemy of the people'.

"To label the press 'the enemy of the people' is as un-American as it is dangerous to the civic compact we have shared for more than two centuries," the Boston Globe wrote in its editorial.

AP reported that more than 300 news organisations had pledged to join a coordinated effort to urge Mr Trump to reconsider his rhetoric towards media.
