At least 25 students have been injured in the capital of Bangladesh a week into protests over road safety.

Protesters are calling for safer roads after two children were killed by a speeding bus last week.

The students are chanting "we want justice" while blocking the city's major intersections.

"We won't leave the roads until our demands are met. We want safe roads and safe drivers," protester Al Miran told AFP news agency.

Thousands of pupils have been stopping traffic in the streets of Dhaka to check licenses and vehicle condition.

It is not clear who attacked the protesters, though local media has reported the perpetrators were pro-government students.

Transport workers have gone on strike over the past few days as students fill the streets.

Police deny reports that claim they used tear gas and rubber bullets on the crowds, though doctor Abdus Shabbir told AFP news agency some of his patients sustained rubber bullet injuries.

The government put a 24-hour ban on mobile internet use in response to the clashes.
