A German woman and her partner have been sentenced to more than a decade in prison for selling the woman's son to abusers over the internet.

The woman, 48, was sentenced to 12 and a half years in prison while her 39-year-old partner, already a convicted paedophile, was sentenced to 12 years in prison, the BBC reports.

The pair were convicted of rape, sexual assault of children, prostitution and distribution of child pornography.

The Freiburg court heard how the boy, now 10, was abused and sold on the darknet to other men for sex.

He was subjected to more than 60 separate sexual attacks - most of which were filmed and sold for large amounts of money on the darknet, BBC reports.

The darknet is a portion of the internet that mainstream search engines such as Google cannot reach.

Five other men have been prosecuted in connection with the boy's abuse, including a Spanish man who was sentenced to 10 years in jail for repeatedly sexually abusing the boy.

The boy is now living with foster parents and the couple have been ordered to pay 42,500 Euro (NZ $73,174) to the boy and a three-year-old girl they also abused.

The case has horrified Germany and highlighted the missed opportunity to rescue the boy given authorities knew the woman's partner was a convicted offender.
