A grandmother in Australia was killed crossing the road while picking up her granddaughter.

Sixty-year-old Sue Carroll heard her 16-year-old granddaughter Natalee was stranded in Berkeley Vale, New South Wales, on Friday night so she drove from her home to pick her up 9News reported.

The retiree parked her car and crossed a road to get to her when she was fatally struck by a car.

Her granddaughter witnessed the incident telling  9News her grandmother was about to step off the road when a car hit her from behind.

"She just fell to the ground. I ran over but I wasn’t allowed to go near her but I tried my hardest just to stay there.'

Mrs Carroll was one of four people killed on New South Wales roads over the weekend, prompting police to urge pedestrians to cross at designated crossings.

"If you’re a pedestrian who’s crossing the road, you must use marked pedestrian foot crossings. Don’t talk on your mobile phone when you’re crossing the road, don’t cross in places where it’s high speed," said assistant commander Michael Corboy

"In reality, it comes down to personal responsibility. Whether you’re driving a car or crossing the road, you need to take care."
