A grandmother who slammed Spanish holidaymakers staying at the same hotel as her in Benidorm has been ridiculed on social media for saying locals shouldn't holiday in their own country.

Freda Jackson, 81, travelled with her 61-year-old friend from Lancashire to the Spanish seaside holiday destination in April 2017 after booking through travel operator Thomas Cook.

In an interview first published in the Lancashire Telegraph, she claimed Spaniards were rude and got on her nerves during her time away from Britain.

The Blackburn woman paid more than NZ$2100 for the trip and says it began to fall apart as soon as they got to the hotel, the Daily Mail reported.

Social media users hit out at the grandmother-of-six, with one woman labelling her claims 'ridiculous' and another calling her 'racist'.

One man on Facebook labelled her 'the face of Brexit' and another joked they had the same experience in France with the French.

"She's a fully signed up member of the 'something for nothing' brigade and fails to see the irony of her complaint" penned one woman.

Ms Jackson criticised the hotel's entertainment which she claims was focused and catered for the Spanish.

"Why can't the Spanish go somewhere else for their holidays?" she said.

Ms Jackson, who suffers from mobility issues, encountered problems early on in her trip after requesting a room on the ground floor at the Poseidon Playa but on arrival staff informed her that she would be on the 14th floor.

They were moved to the second level but were made to walk 42 steps down to the hotel's swimming pool.

The retired care assistant said the hotel was full of Spanish holidaymakers who really got on her nerves because they "were just so rude".

"One evening a Spanish guy nearly knocked me flying and he just walked off without even apologising."

A Thomas Cook spokesman confirmed an offer had been made to Ms Jackson to remedy the complaint.

“We are very sorry for the inconvenience this caused and are investigating to make sure it doesn't happen again.

“We have offered Ms Jackson and her travel companion a gesture of goodwill to try and put things right which we hope she will accept.”

According to Mail Online the pair have been offered just over $1000NZD to be split between them but it was reported that Ms Jackson is still deciding if that is enough.
