Hawaii braces for largest hurricane in decades

Hawaii is bracing for the largest hurricane to hit the island group in decades.

The outer bands of Hurricane Lane are currently lashing the Big Island with strong winds and more than half a metre of rain.

There are landslides and road closures across the island as rivers overflow.

The southernmost island is currently bearing the brunt of the storm but the rest of the state including Honolulu lies directly in its path.

Store shelves have emptied out and gas is in short supply as people hunker down in their homes and board up their windows.

Hawaii's last direct hitting hurricane was the hugely destructive Hurricane Inniki in 1992. It caused $3 billion in damage.
