A teenager hiking up an Irish mountain ended up in hospital after being hit by a falling sheep.

The boy was walking with a group on Slieve Bearnagh, a peak in southeast Northern Ireland, on Friday (local time) when the sheep jumped off a crag above, landing on the boy.

He was rushed to a hospital in Ulster, where he underwent treatment before being discharged, the BBC reported.

"We believe the sheep was uninjured and left the area unaided," the Mourne Mountain Rescue Team said in a statement.

Slieve Bearnagh is 739m high, nearly four times higher than Mt Eden and exactly the same height as Dunedin's Swampy Summit.
