A British man has been handed down a suspended sentence after impersonating his ex-fiancée's dead mother to tell her to forgive him.

Roy Meadwell, 51, broke a restraining order to send a letter to Kay Wimbury telling her she was wrong to reject him, the BBC reports.

The letter didn't name Meadwell, but mentioned a man who has "sacrificed everything for you" and said all Ms Wimbury had to do was call him.

Another letter supposedly sent by an anonymous well-wisher urged Ms Wimbury to "see the greatness in this man".

Ms Wimbury said it was clear to her that the letters had been sent by Meadwell as they contained information that only he knew.

Recorder Martin Meeke, QC, sentenced Meadwell to four months in prison with the sentence suspended for two years.

The restraining order against him remains in place.

"This sentence is suspended for two years and it is designed to have the Sword of Damocles hanging over you for as long as I can," Mr Meeke said.

"If you contact Kay Wimbury again you will go straight inside."
