A Canadian McDonald's outlet has apologised after serving a pregnant customer cleaning fluid instead of coffee.

Sarah Douglas, 31, was on her way to her son's baseball game when she stopped in at the Lethbridge, Canada McDonald's and ordered a medium latte, reports The New York Times.

Eight months pregnant with her third child, Ms Douglas received what she thought was her coffee and went on her way.

While driving on the highway, she took a sip and immediately felt her mouth burning, quickly pulling over on the side of the road to realise what she drinking "wasn't a latte at all", but a murky brown chemical liquid.

Returning to the fast-food restaurant, Ms Douglas was offered another coffee, which she refused, before she learned the coffee machine had been incorrectly set up to allow the machine's cleaning solution to connect to the milk supply line.

It's not the first time such an incident has happened, and a worker at the outlet said it was maddening that it could be allowed to happen again.

Kristen Hunter, a McDonald's spokeswoman, said, "We are aware that there are other isolated incidents of this nature [but] even one incident is too many."

Luckily, Ms Douglas had not swallowed any of the cleaning solution and was given the all-clear by a doctor.

She said she hoped that by speaking out about her experience she would educate the public, and place pressure on the industry to be stricter with safety protocols.
