A US mother has received shocking letter from her daughter who went missing five years ago.

Emily Wynell Paul, now 19, disappeared in 2013 when she was 14. She left only a note stating her intention to leave home.

Investigators say she likely researched online how to successfully run away. She took her Xbox game console with her and hasn't used her Facebook account since she left home.

Now her mother, Pam Massimian, has shared to social media that she's heard from her daughter for the first time.

"To all our friends and extended family, we want to let you know that we have heard from Emily," she wrote.

"We do not have any further information to share at the moment. Thank you all for your support and love you have shown to our family."

Ms Paul's family say they are keeping the contents of the letter private for now.
