Thousands of human teeth have been found under the Melbourne CBD during an archaeological dig.

More than 500,000 artefacts have been dug up as a part of the $11 billion Metro Tunnel Project - a metropolitan rail infrastructure project currently underway - The Age reports.

It is believed the human teeth were likely left there by a dentist or surgeon - many of whom worked in the area in the 20th Century.

The teeth were reportedly found on the corner of Flinders St and Swanston St.

"I think it's lovely to get back to the roots of what the city is built around," archaeologist Jen Porter said.

Most of the teeth were adults with visible stain marks. Many showed obvious signs of decay, often with exposed roots - meaning patients would have been in extreme pain prior to their removal.

Other artefacts found included a pipe, dice and earrings.
