Shallow 7.1-magnitude earthquake strikes off New Caledonia

A powerful undersea earthquake measuring magnitude 7.1 has struck near New Caledonia.

The quake struck at a depth of 26.7km, some 372 km east of the New Caledonian capital Noumea, The United States Geological Survey website says.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said there was no Pacific-wide tsunami threat.
