A group of vegan protesters in the UK were abused by a butcher who swung pieces of raw meat in their faces at a market in Leeds, video shows.

The clash took place at Leeds Kirkgate Market on Saturday, July 28, Metro reports. Protester Ginette Lindstrom posted video footage of the butcher flailing the meat around to her Facebook page, and the post has since received over 2000 reactions.

The woman, who labels herself a 'Vegan Warrior', told Metro the abuse started "immediately as we turned the corner and became visible to the butchers," recalling people telling the group of protesters to "get out" and "f**k off".

One of the stall traders at the market even tried to grab Ms Lindstrom's phone.

She made the decision to film the ordeal so that "people could see that we remained peaceful at all times and in case of physical assault or further abuse".

What was intended to be a peaceful protest against animal cruelty in the agriculture sector soon turned nasty as the butcher "physically assaulted" Ms Lindstrom with animal body parts and "pushed" them into her face.

The protesters received "physical and sexual threats," Ms Lindstrom recalls.

Many on social media many have expressed sympathy and support for the protesters, highlighting the "lack of respect" shown by the butcher.

"Disgusting vile excuse for men," one Facebook user commented.

Others hailed the group of protesters as "heroes", with one user telling Ms Lindstrom to not "let those ignorant idiots wind you up".

But some challenged Ms Lindstrom's views on veganism. She posted a response she received from a Facebook users who told her to "calm down" and try to use her power and energy "on something useful".

"The reaction has been mixed, as we expected," Ms Lindstrom says, but believes the Facebook post has "really highlighted some extremely twisted and disturbed individuals and promoters for the agricultural industry".

The incident has been reported to the police.
