Wildfires in Ireland have uncovered a huge sign from World War II warning other countries' air forces they were flying over neutral territory.

Irish police spotted the sign from a helicopter over wildfires burning just south of Dublin on Saturday (local time). The word "Eire" spelled out in rocks had previously been hidden by dense gorse.

The signs had been made during WWII to warn passing pilots they were flying over neutral territory and should not drop bombs nearby.

More than 80 of the signs lie across the country, many on the coastline, but a spokesperson for police wrote on Twitter they had not seen one like the one revealed by fire.

"A Garda Air Support Unit crew spotted that the fire on Bray Head has revealed an "EIRE" sign dating from the Second World War," the tweet said.

"We see these around the coastline but haven't seen this before."

A spokesperson later added the signs were more common on the west coast, but it was unusual to spot one on the east.
