A taxi driver in Adelaide has been stabbed after trying to retrieve money from a passenger who attempted to dodge her fare.

Ali Anwari is now at home with his family, recovering after two rounds of surgery, 7 News reported.

The father-of-six dropped a young woman at the Elizabeth Shopping Centre on Saturday morning, with her fare coming to $37.

She allegedly told him that she didn't have enough money and would get the money from a nearby ATM.

Mr Anwari told 7 News he saw her withdraw $50 but she didn't make her way back to his cab, choosing instead to go inside a shop.

He chased her before the young woman pulled a knife on him, slashing his right hand and his left arm.

"Flick knife, flick knife, took out flick knife. Slashed first my right hand," he claimed.

The woman was in court on Monday charged with aggravated assault causing serious harm 7 News reported.

It is understood that on Friday she will ask a magistrate if she can be released on bail.

Mr Anwari said if they don't take strong action against her, that it is likely to happen again.
